The Pedestal Series opens with a reception 5–7 pm on May 19th and will run through June 16th. A portion of the proceeds from sales of the art will go to benefit the Pawling Farmers Market. Lynn Karlin’s new body of work is purely personal—it is about the obvious but often overlooked beauty of the harvest. “Weekly visits to the local farmers market took a new direction when I brought an amazingly beautiful purple cauliflower back to my studio and placed it on an old white pedestal by an east-facing window. The joy I got from that photograph started me on a quest to continue with my concept: honoring vegetables by literary placing them on a higher level. Two years later, I have collected more than a dozen various pedestals and have expanded my subjects to include fruit and flowers.” Originally from New York, Karlin graduated from Pratt Institute. She has had an impressive list of employers and clients over her four-decade career shooting fashion, interiors and gardens. After her staff position as the first woman photographer for Women’s Wear Daily and W, she went on to assignments for The New York Times Magazine, New York Magazine, Coastal Living, Garden [...]

A life-long artist, Arlene Nadel came to painting after being a professional dancer and ceramicist. She studied art at The Art Student’s League, The National Academy of Design, The School of Visual Arts and Parsons. In explaining Keyhole, Ms. Nadel states, “An open door is an obvious symbol, of opportunity and freedom. In Keyhole, the door is closed, creating a moment of intimate space between subject and artist. People have passed through that door, into my studio, and stolen fleeting time from the freedom and opportunity of the other side, stopped in flux. It is a respite but also a generous gesture. They will pass through the door again and life will go on.” An open door is an obvious symbol, of opportunity and freedom. In Keyhole, the door is closed, creating a moment of intimate space between subject and artist. Ms. Nadel has been in many shows in the region and has work in several private collections. With two studios, one in Union Square and one in Pawling she does portraits—person or animal—on commission and is always happy to talk to people about art. This work is dedicated to Arlene’s late husband, director, Bruce Nadel.

Gallery on the Green today introduces its July exhibition of drawings by Carol Heft. The exhibit opens with a reception 5-7 pm on July 23 and will run through August 20th. This collection of drawings takes you into the artist’s mind by showing all the attempts, adjustments, and marks of exploration—along with the final elegant resolution. The lines are fluid, dynamic and very much alive. Heft currently teaches at Muhlenberg and Cedar Crest Colleges, all of these drawings were all done in front of beginning drawing students as demonstrations of how to use materials, compose, explore marks in the context of figure drawing, and, mostly, focus on capturing the energy of the pose. “I’ve always wanted to exhibit them together” says Heft, “I think as a body of work they are strong.” Carol Heft will be featured in a book to be published later this year by Tim Phelan, 50 Contemporary Artists. Her bio includes: painting with Robert Brackman as a child, and attending Rhode Island School of Design. She has named Paul Klee, Antonio Gaudi, Isaiah Zagar, Jean Dubuffet among her influences and has had numerous solo exhibits at galleries in Manhattan.

While some people think that art and science are mutually exclusive methods of exploring the natural world, Reynolds sees art as a complimentary force to science.

“Unlike Scientific discourse which is restricted to the generation of propositions that strive to accurately record the operations of natural phenomena,” says Reynolds, “Art is more concerned with aesthetic appreciation as a way of understanding and experiencing the world.” These artistic methods can be particularly effective at deepening human's connection and dependence on the natural world, ideas that are not dissimilar to those held by 19th Century painters.
