Besides her highly inventive ceramics, Alison Palmer is showing a whole new dimension of her work. Actually, 2 dimensions. Gallery on the Green is exhibiting the illustrations that are the drawings and concepts behind her sculptures. The notes in Alison’s sketchbook tell the story: “Here we are brainstorming in Mexico. I couldn’t bring clay on vacation so I brought my sketchbook. We got to thinking we’d like to make art affordable to everyone. After 35 years of making clay vessels and sculpture, and with every piece being so labor intensive, we needed to come up with a new idea. I have the drawings of my sculptures. Why not make prints of them?” Alison’s ceramic work work ranges from low-fire whimsical ceramics that are as beautiful as they are functional, to one-of-a-kind stoneware and her latest high-fire sculpture. “I strive to achieve a lighthearted meld of the human and animal form,” says Palmer. “These anthropomorphic figures are developed by throwing and altering the stoneware clay and wood-firing them to cone 10. The fire and ash contribute to the spontaneous and unpredictable finish which gives the pieces a primitive, elemental look.” Alison and her husband Steve Katz live in Kent, Connecticut with [...]

The Pedestal Series opens with a reception 5–7 pm on May 19th and will run through June 16th. A portion of the proceeds from sales of the art will go to benefit the Pawling Farmers Market. To see Anne Raver’s write-up in the Home section of the The New York Times go to Lynn Karlin’s Photos of Vegetables on Exhibit. See Marilyn Bethany’s article on our opening in Rural Intelligence. Lynn Karlin’s new body of work is purely personal—it is about the obvious but often overlooked beauty of the harvest. “Weekly visits to the local farmers market took a new direction when I brought an amazingly beautiful purple cauliflower back to my studio and placed it on an old white pedestal by an east-facing window. The joy I got from that photograph started me on a quest to continue with my concept: honoring vegetables by literary placing them on a higher level. Two years later, I have collected more than a dozen various pedestals and have expanded my subjects to include fruit and flowers.” Originally from New York, Karlin graduated from Pratt Institute. She has had an impressive list of employers and clients over her four-decade career shooting fashion, interiors and [...]

A life-long artist, Arlene Nadel came to painting after being a professional dancer and ceramicist. She studied art at The Art Student’s League, The National Academy of Design, The School of Visual Arts and Parsons. In explaining Keyhole, Ms. Nadel states, “An open door is an obvious symbol, of opportunity and freedom. In Keyhole, the door is closed, creating a moment of intimate space between subject and artist. People have passed through that door, into my studio, and stolen fleeting time from the freedom and opportunity of the other side, stopped in flux. It is a respite but also a generous gesture. They will pass through the door again and life will go on.” An open door is an obvious symbol, of opportunity and freedom. In Keyhole, the door is closed, creating a moment of intimate space between subject and artist. Ms. Nadel has been in many shows in the region and has work in several private collections. With two studios, one in Union Square and one in Pawling she does portraits—person or animal—on commission and is always happy to talk to people about art. This work is dedicated to Arlene’s late husband, director, Bruce Nadel.
